If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere – Frank A. Clark
Life gets tricky.
The road toward your goals can sometimes get jammed.
The journey through love and relationships may climb steep hills, coast for a while, then dip into unforeseen valleys.
Along the way, it can seem like obstacles and roadblocks spring up out of nowhere.
Forcing turn-offs down unmapped side roads and detours you never imagined.
It would be easy to get discouraged, turn around and go back.
No one would blame you. But you also won’t get anywhere that way.
Don’t stop. Choose a new direction and keep on moving.
Youre headed somewhere important–even if it’s unexpected.
Still feeling lost? Let’s map this out.
When you are met with obstacles, take a turn down the following roads
1. Self-awareness Avenue
When we meet life’s obstacles we often find we can’t navigate around them because we get in our own way. By becoming aware of your own strengths, weaknesses, and beliefs, you become more present and able to accept the current situation as it is. Mindfully focus in on how your thoughts and emotions lead you. Pay attention to the way your mind and body respond to change. This allows you to uncover triggers, personality traits, and behaviors that impact your life and the way you relate to others. From a place of self awareness and heightened emotional intelligence, you can better direct your path.
2. Self-compassion Drive
You may find that your obstacles become stop signs if you assume the momentary pause in your plans is punishment. Your circumstances are not an indictment of your goals and your worth. When roadblocks dictate an unforeseen change or decision, speak kindly to yourself.
Affirm your right to try something new. Affirm your right to make mistakes along the way.
Give yourself permission to take the whole ride–without shame or handing the wheel over to someone else.
3. Reassessment Road
Obstacles allow us to pump our brakes for a moment, slow down, and really consider the direction we’re heading. You can take new turns with eyes wide open, instead of just coasting along.
You can reconsider the whole destination and map out a whole new route.
You can forge ahead, wiser and more determined.
Obstacles remind us that we are in control and we really do have the power to choose which roads to take.
4. Support Street
When you’re stalled on your life journey, call for help. Sometimes you just need a lift and someone to help you regroup.
You can call on your loved ones, people who know you and understand your hopes for the future. You can call on a counselor who can help you understand the road thus far and objectively help you plot a new course. Why not do both?
Supportive “roadside assistance” is a godsend when life’s obstacles feel overwhelming and the road seems too dark.
5. Celebration Highway
Every obstacle you clear is reason for a party. Celebrate your strength. Take pleasure in perseverance. Rejoice in the richness afforded by turning the corner from the life you imagined to the one you’ve lived well. You’re doing it. You’re taking life as it comes.
You’re moving ahead. You’re awesome.
Moving forward is courageous and most of us need a few obstacles to make us really brave.
Don’t fear the roadblocks. Don’t fight the uncharted path.
Enjoy the ride. Even if you’re forced to take the scenic route.
Call on friends and wise counsel if you lose your way.
Your future is never so set that it couldn’t benefit from a few unexpected turns.
